Footlights Threatre Company visit

Posted on Monday 18th November 2019

Priestley’s play, in which a Police Inspector knocks at the door and each of the Birlings are implicated in the death of a young woman, is a set text for GCSE English Literature. The visit allowed students to see the play as it was originally intended as a piece of live theatre.

Director of English Mrs Scriven said, “This was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to experience the text in its correct format; they gained a lot from it. The question and answer session at the end was particularly useful for context.”

Year 11 pupil Grace Todd echoed these sentiments and thought the actors really played the role of each character really well. The students were equally enthusiastic and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see the play in performance and out of the class room.

Leah Kirvin in Year 11 said, “I really enjoyed the play. It helped me understand it a little more and to develop my knowledge of the characters.”

Students were also given the opportunity to ‘hot seat’ the characters and were able to gain greater insight into the characters and their motivation.

Jacob Stansfield thought the play was amazing and loved the characters and how engaging the play was.  The English Faculty are currently planning future theatre trips to enrich the experience of English for the students at Hazel Wood High School.
