Celebrating World Book Day
In every year 7, 8 and 9 class, students worked cooperatively to read the crime scene and unpick the statements from the potential suspects - who were other members of staff. Students needed to plan a timeline of events, find the motives hidden in the statements and read the handbooks and memos from Detective Rathor Watson and Chief Inspector Greenhalgh Holmes - yes, even our Deputy Headteacher and Headteacher were characters in this plot!
In Science lessons, the Science team became Forensic Investigators who shared how toxicology results and finger-printing could pin-point suspects. Their doors were decorated with blood splatter and they wore white suits to match. Elsewhere in school, every teacher's door was decorated with a 'Murder Mystery' theme and faculty staff came dressed to impressed with characters ranging from those out of 'Murder on the Orient Express' to 'Scooby Do'. There were MFL competitions around school with Spanish Cluedo; and students read a book in a day, with a Masked Reader in every lesson reading a chapter. Book Dingbats was played and there was a staff and student raffle to raise money to buy books for our Manga Club and School Library.
On top of all of this, with huge thanks to W.H Smiths in Bury, we were able to give every student a book to take home and read by using the National Book Token Scheme. Our students are incredibly grateful for the support of their Manager who went above and beyond to secure the books for us!
The 'Book Buzz' around school was fabulous. We made the difficult decision for Year 10 and 11 students not to have these lessons, so that they could continue to focus on their GCSE study after lessons lost to lockdowns, but they were regularly found during breaktimes and after school, asking the Key Stage 3 students what had happened, and many of them still entered the completion to guess who the culprit was and how it had happened! Our ultimate winner, securing herself an Amazon voucher, was Miya-Rose Odell, pictured here receiving her voucher.
